David and Goliath
Concept:
Who is God?
God is all-powerful!
God
controls kings and nations!
Bible Lesson:
David and Goliath (I Samuel 17)
Application: God controls my nation and its
rulers.
Suggested Activities
1. If the room is large enough,
let the children help you measure out nine feet on the floor and mark
with tape. If not, then measure it on the sidewalk outside. Lay down a
small blanket to cover the floor, and let a child lay with his feet at
the tape. Show the other children how much bigger Goliath was than the
child.
2. To make David’s sling take a
brown paper lunch bag and cut off the top half of the bag. Draw 4
stones on gray construction paper, about 3 inches in diameter. Have
children cut them out, or cut them out for them. On the bag write
these words: "I trust in the Lord." Psalm 31:6. Using a hole punch,
punch 2 holes on either side of the bag so you can attach brown yarn
to the bag. Put the stones in the bag. You could also let each child
make a pouch in which to keep the stones. Cut for each child two
identical oblong shapes of brown construction paper. From one of the
two shapes, cut one of the rounded ends off. Place one shape on top of
the other matching the identical edges and punch holes around the
edges, excluding the remaining uncut rounded end. Let each child "sew"
his or her pouch together with yarn, and then bend down the remaining
rounded end as a closing flap.
3. Talk about how little David,
although small, defeated the mighty giant. Discuss ways that children
can help their communities become more pleasing to God. For example,
they can tell others about Jesus, obey the laws of the land and
encourage others to also obey the laws of the land, be kind and
helpful to friends and neighbors and encourage others to do the same,
and help keep houses, streets, buildings and parks clean and encourage
others to do the same.
4. Cut a simple shield shape from
poster board no bigger than 5 in. by 7 in. for each child. Cut a
square of aluminum foil slightly larger than the shield for each
child. Also cut out the letters G, O, and D from colored construction
paper about 1 ½ inches each for each child. In class, let each child
cover a shield with foil and glue it on a sheet of colored
construction paper. Then write the word GOD on the white board. Have
each child arrange his paper letters in the correct order to spell GOD
and glue them to the shield. Tell the children that God is our shield,
and write the words, "God is our shield!" at the top of each paper.
