What is the history of this idea?
This belief did not happen in just a few years. It happened over many centuries.

First Century
All Christians were saints.

Third Century
Special honor for local martyrs (Christians who died for
The Faith). Selected by local believers.

Fourth Century
Local bishops were added to the official list.
Selected by local believers.

Sixth Century
Local special saints became popular over the world.
Selection of saints changed from local selection to
selection by the Pope.

Sixteenth Century
Common practice to pray to saints for
assurance and salvation.

Seventeenth Century
A sainthood selection commission was established.
The pope was the only one who could
official name a new saint.
