Speaking
in Different Languages |

Speaking in Tongues
1. The
first example of speaking in tongues in the New Testament is in Acts 2. The
disciples were waiting in Jerusalem when they heard a sound like a wind,
and saw fire that looked like tongues that came down of the apostles.
The
apostles were given the ability to speak in languages they had not
learned. |
|
2. The
tongues spoken in the New Testament were not what is called ecstatic
gibberish or the language of God.
These tongues were recognized by the people as their
native languages. A list of the languages understood is found in
Acts 2:9-11. Notice, the apostles spoke and the people heard in their own
language. |
|
3.
Acts 2 does not say the apostles were speaking in a
language, it says they spoke in other
languages. If this was the language of God, it would be one
language not many languages. |
