The Knothole Rose
The only way one would know there was a fence around this yard was a few slats and an occasional large fence post.
There were three of us, and our job was to repair this invisible fence. It was almost comical as we stood under one of the trees in the yard and looked at what someone had described as a fence.
But, there was one place in this invisible fence that was not a laughing matter. There were several slats together
and a rose from the

neighbor's yard had grown through a knothole in one of
the slats. Beautiful red roses were blooming on this lonely stem. It added a certain, mystical charm to an otherwise dismal situation.
As we worked on the fence, the roses became a real bright spot in our day. We marveled at how this rose bush seemed to seek out this particular knothole just to show off its beauty in the middle of
uncommon ugliness.
The closer we got to the rose bush, the more we regretted having to cut it off to finish the fence. Before we got to the rose we came up with a solution. When we got to the rose bush, we cut a hole in the fence just for the rose. The rose bush
was saved.
Thinking of one lonely rose bush in an unimportant fence slat, we are reminded of the times we destroy beautiful things so that necessary things may be done. Maybe we can remember one rose bush growing through a knothole in a broken down fence...smile, and find another way.
