Lost in her
strength!
She was just another attractive, middle-aged lady in
line to get service...until she handed her written request to the
clerk. The request was genuine, but had an unusual appearance.
Another person in the line commented on her unusual
writing...perfect calligraphy.
She smiled and skillfully told her story. It was obvious she had
told the story before. She gave us printed samples of her
handwriting and told how she could barely read her own handwriting
before she did something about her problem. She had genuine disgust
in her voice as she described her disgust at the mess she called
writing...and how she had purchased a book and proceeded to change
her life. The transformation from scribble to immaculate was not
easy or swift. The result was obvious...for everyone to see.
As I watched and listened, I could not help being impressed. She had
worked hard to accomplish something very special, but the more she
talked an uneasy sadness touched my heart. Something seemed to be
wrong! My admiration slowly changed to something close to pity.
It seemed we were witnessing the actions of a woman who had overcome a serious
weakness...now possessed by
another, more subtle weakness. She had overcome a problem
without changing the way she felt about herself. Consequently, she
had merely replaced lameness with a sophisticated crutch. Was she
more crippled than before?

It is easy to hide behind talent
or accomplishment...and lose my real identity as a servant who must
rely on the Master for all my needs. If my talent or accomplishment
was taken away...would I still be confident in the Lord?
"I have been crucified with Christ and I
no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body,
I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for
me."
(Galatians 2:20)
